We gathered research over the past six years and compared it with the results of our study from this past summer, to get a closer look at the changing behaviors of American audiences towards live video and the role it now plays in their daily life.
Today, 1 in 3 people live video chat at least once a week
Every year people become more comfortable using technology in nearly every area of their life. And live video is no different. Live video communication grows in popularity every year, with many businesses moving faster to accommodate consumer demand. Businesses across different industries are using live video communications to help their consumers do things like schedule physician consultations, bank online, or study in a virtual classroom.
Welcome back to Real-Talk, where each month we bring you the hottest news, views and developments in the world of live video, WebRTC and real-time communications.
This month’s news was all about group video. WhatsApp rolled out 4 person video chat; Facebook introduced a feature that lets groups watch videos together; and Apple came up against the challenges of building multi-party video announcing delays to group FaceTime. In other developments, the combination of AR and live video is poised to transform communications across industries, and of course some big news of our own!
The evolution of live video has spawned new and engaging ways for brands, organizations and people to connect with their audience. Whether it’s participating in a team meeting held remotely, hosting a virtual conference for hundreds of people all over the world, demo-ing a new product to customers via a webinar, or broadcasting a live stream of an event, there is no question live video is now becoming a standard feature in any business or entrepreneur’s communication toolkit.
UPDATE 9/16/15: After we published this post Google announced that they are pushing back the release date of the HTTPS security change. They’re estimating that it will now be released to production in December 2015.
Google recently announced a security policy change that will impact future versions of the Chrome browser. Any website which has integrated geolocation technology, screen-sharing, WebRTC and more, will now be required to be served from a secure (HTTPS) site.
We at TokBox are supportive of this update as we believe operating your WebRTC-based applications through HTTPS is a best practice and offers enhanced security. In addition, it has the added bonus of improving your end-user experience by remembering their hardware settings, and even allowing screen-sharing (if you choose to implement it).
