In recent years it has become increasingly difficult to ignore the explosion of live video in social media. The ubiquitous nature of it has permeated its way into daily life. For example, when Facebook launched a live video option on its messenger app last year there were over one million calls made in its first two days. Skype still accommodates 300 million monthly users and Apple's Facetime can count on 20 million calls a day. This can be put down to a number of different reasons including changing behavior and the proliferation of enabling hardware and technologies.
This paper will explore the rise of live streaming in social media, the opportunities for social network providers - whether platform giants or niche communities - to leverage real-time technology to create truly interactive experiences that drive engagement as we enter the next phase of interactive broadcasting.
